  1. Hello Everybody!,
We are the Highway Re-route Movement (H.R.M)and our objective is to re-route the proposed highway from Debe to Mon Desir. Please note, we don't want to stop this highway project, but rather, we want it re-routed to a path that will cause least disruption and destruction and to a path that may even be more cost-effective. Yes, some may say that the construction of this highway has a number of positive effects, but these come at a very high cost to the communities and families, directly or indirectly affected.

Constructing this highway along the proposed path will have the following impact:
    -separating families
    -loss of homes
    -disconnecting communities
    -increased flooding
    -destruction of our wetlands/eco-system
    -loss of wildlife
    -disruption of the water system
-loss of agricultural lands, affecting the livelihood of many families
    -rural peace disruption
    -noise pollution
    -dust pollution
-destruction of schools, places of worship, orphanage
-loss of the Amerindian heritage site

    ...and the list goes on......

So please, lend your support and let's work together to get this highway re-routed and save our homes and communities!

So c'mon people, please feel free to express your comments, thoughts and opinions on this matter....

    Thanks again and happy blogging!!!!

  2. Don't be fooled by what you read in the newspapers we're not against the proposed highway. The problem area is Debe to Mon Desir. I think the engineers and folks in office should go back to the drawing boards...
We've sent numerous letters to our Ministers and received very little feedback. It's all hush hush...

  5. The Case :
This highway will cost approx 7.6 Billion Dollars!!!
It involves : Destruction of over 300 homes, 400 acres of prime argricultural lands, the DEBE Market, schools, places of worship, 61 oil wells to be capped.....No clue about compensation or relocation...do they really think we'll just give up our lands that easily?
I am no architect but I am pretty certain that they can come up with a new route - one which does not involve wasting so much dam money!
Get serious Jack...you cannot disrupt these communities already established without major societal/ecological/environmental consequences.
Is anyone here in support of this make-work project tailored for bustle, prestige and deal, rather than ital development?

    -Jack, forget Maracas tunnel

THIS is an open letter to Works Minister Jack Warner.

The proposed Maracas tunnel will be the worst ecological/environment disaster to hit Trinidad.

Even if you build it no one wants to go to an overcrowded beach, not even tourists. Get serious, Jack. The cost for repairing 4/5 landslips per year for 20 years would not add up to the cost of the pre-feasibility study to engineer the Maracas tunnel, apart from the ecological damage to the rivers, trees and mountains (a worldwide concern).

And while you are discussing the cost with the Finance Minister I hope you are preparing to submit new engineering costs for the Debe leg of the highway to Point Fortin as you cannot disrupt the communities already established without major ecological/environment consequences.

Jack you did a magical job recently on the Solomon Hochoy Highway. The work was quickly done with little disruption but you forgot one thing. You cannot cover up the earth with so much concrete and not at least leave a three foot by three foot space (every 30 feet) to plant some trees.

We need to breathe oxygen and the trees that surround you are our major supply; so please plant up/beautify the concrete strip you have just paved on the highway with some fast growing, low maintenance, pink poui/apamate trees. In 20 years time we may be able to get some timber to build new school tables and chairs at no cost in return for your eco-minded, patient and foresight; you will be a remembered hero 20 years on.

  7. Most trini’s believe that creating an asphalt and concrete jungle is true development with little or no consideration to the environment. How an I change your mindset? A small minority including myself adore nature..the rest believe that the tall buildings in New York city is absolutely marvelous and what we should aim for here.
After reading all your posts, perhaps I should define what is sustainable development - it is a pattern of growth in which resource use aims to meet (Sociopolitical) human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but also for generations to come (Wikipedia)
THIS HIGHWAY DOES NOT PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT.

Environmental - Over 400 acres of prime agricultural lands will be destroyed. This affects 200 farmers who depend on their lands to support their families and provide much needed income in these hard times. Imagine destroying soil with a geo-fertilty of 15 feet deep which could support a fifteen hundred year food basket. Agriculture, Food Production and nutrition security is ranked 2nd in the government's five priority items in it's medium term policy framework...
There is very little noise and dust pollution in the areas carded for destruction plus the abundant vegetation works to counter balance any CO2 emissions.
These areas have a rich and diverse historical and cultural background. The site where Trinidad's oldest resident - The Banwari Man - is in close proximity to the proposed highway. Lastly this project will use up 7.6 BILLION Dollars - maybe more than that - financing which has not so far been forthcoming. The 1.5 Billion Dollars which they are using currently was taken from Central Bank's trasury deposits - tax payers income.

  8. FOLKS, FOLKS, IT’S NOT THE WHOLE HIGHWAY THAT IS BAD: JUST THE MON DESIR TO DEBE SEGMENT.
THE MAIN SAN FERNANDO TO POINT FORTIN HIGHWAY WILL BE BENEFICIAL. BUT THE MON DESIR TO DEBE SECTION OF HIGHWAY MUST BE ABORTED, AND A SYSTEM OF OTHER LINKAGES DEVISED.
THE MON DESIR TO DEBE SECTION WILL CAUSE DISCONNECTIVITY, WIDESCALE PERSISTENT FLOODING, GREAT DISTRESS AND DISLOCATION, AND UNNECESSARY COSTS TO THE TAXPAYER.
MON DESIR TO DEBE SECTION IS A MAKE WORK PROGRAM FOR CONTRACTS. BEFORE: TO BUILD. AFTER: TO CONTROL FLOODING. THIS IS CALLED DISASTER DEVELOPMENT.
THE PEOPLE LIVING IN COMMUNITIES ON THE OROPUCHE BASIN BETWEEN MON DESIR AND DEBE ARE BEING SACRIFICED LIKE LAMBS ON THE ALTAR OF BOGUS CONSULTATION, BOGUS CONNECTIVITY, BOGUS COST-BENEFIT ANALYSIS, BOGUS CERTIFICATION.
